Extruded Stainless Steel Angle

Action Stainless stocks only extruded Angle. Fabrication of non-conventional angles is available upon request.

Extrusion is a process used to create objects of a fixed cross-sectional profile. A material is pushed or drawn through a die of the desired cross-section. The two main advantages of this process over other manufacturing processes is its ability to create very complex cross-sections and work materials that are brittle, because the material only encounters compressive and shear stresses. It also forms finished parts with an excellent surface finish. Extrusion may be continuous (theoretically producing indefinitely long material) or semi-continuous (producing many pieces). The extrusion process can be done with the material hot or cold.

Fabricated angles

Angle bending involves both simple one-axis bends or multiple bends. Multiple bends produce formed parts. Most angle bends are made from sheet or plate stock. Sheet metal is flat material .006 to .250 in. thick. Plate metal exceeds .250 in.

When designing a part for angle bending, these major factors must be considered:

  1. The minimum bend radius for the material. Bends sharper than this will cause the material to crack,
  2. The springback that can be expected, This factor is the degree to which the material moves back toward its original shape when the forming pressure is removes. While it can be mathematically estimated, actual springback can be determined through experimentation with the bending process.
  3. The size of blank needed to produce a part of proper finish size. Bend allowances must be considered.
  4. The minimum length of the material which can be bent. The length of the material must be at least the bend radius plus one and one-half to two times the thickness of the metal.
  5. The tolerance that can be expected. Tolerances less than 1/32 in. are difficult to hold.
